The Sanitation Division provides the following services:

The City of Marietta has established a goal of diverting 25% of the solid waste stream away from landfills. The City has a comprehensive solid waste management program which includes yard waste collection which is converted to compost.

If you are looking to get out of your own home and into someone else’s, the Cathedral Anitques Show and Tour of Homes is coming up in Buckhead. The show runs January 22-26, and is located at the Cathedral of St. Philip on 2744 Peachtree Road.

The 38th Annual Cathedral Antiques Show and Tour of Homes is Atlanta’s oldest and most prestigious antiques show. It features 35 exhibitors, offering exquisite 18th and 19th century anitques, furniture, paintings, textiles, porcelain, jewelry, silber and other fine pieces.

All proceeds from the show benefit Soul Changers Women’s House.

Readers Choice Awards has selected Marietta as the “Best Downtown or Town Square” in Georgia. Marietta beat out Dahlonega and Savannah for the honor. The Marietta Square was not the only local winner. Kennesaw Mountain was named “Best Historic Site.” Marietta Diner was named “Best Diner” and Williamson Brothers Barbecue was named “Best Place to Get Barbecue.” The Whitlock Inn received Honorable Mention in the Bed & Breakfast Category.

The longest running Broadway revue in history will delight Lyric audiences. In 1990, an armed robber burst into the Marietta convenience store Jung Ja Lee owned with her husband, Jae Chung Lee.

A bullet hit Mr. Lee in the chest and left him paralyzed. Mrs. Lee, a native of South Korea, was left to look after the Atlanta Road Grocery and her husband until his death in 1996. She kept running the store for years after that.

“She worked 12-plus-hour days six days a week, and on the seventh day, she didn’t rest. She took care of her home,” said her son, Justin Lee of Duluth.

Before the shooting, Mrs. Lee’s fortitude was already the stuff of family lore. When she took her husband to visit her family in South Korea, she lifted him on her back and carried him across a stream so his suit wouldn’t be dirty.

When he fell on hard times, she pawned her engagement ring so he could start his business again.

Mrs. Lee, 59, of Marietta died of a brain aneurysm Monday at WellStar Kennestone Hospital. The funeral is 11 a.m. today at Carmichael Funeral Home.

University student Jordan Ashley Denney, 20, of Marietta, fell asleep at a stop sign at the intersection of Woodland Hills and South Milledge early Sunday.

Denney was taken to the Clarke County jail.

Buyers have never received a fat bonus check, so they don’t miss it now. They did not suffer huge stock market losses, because they didn’t have huge stock market investments. They aren’t mourning the loss of value in their existing co-ops or condos, because they have never owned one.

They have jobs and good credit ratings, and they are looking to buy.

And now, brokers say, these mostly first-time homeowners are taking advantage of reduced apartment prices and interest rates that have fallen to the lowest levels in a generation. They’re making deals — sometimes far below asking price — on apartments marketed for under $1 million, and especially under $500,000. Still, the hard number of transactions remains depressed; in the fourth quarter of 2008, they were more than 30 percent below levels of a year earlier, according to a market report by the Corcoran Group.

This is a personal choice. Where some people see opportunity, others see risk. Where some people choose to buy, others choose to rent. In Marietta, home prices have fallen, and the community of renters remains strong. So it really come down to the individual. Marietta apartments are available, but so are some enticing homes now for sale at low prices.

The Times-Herald recently ran an article about the situation. It’s especially interesting because the author is from Alabama.

Georgia had a secret agreement with the Corps of Engineers to allocate more water from Lake Lanier downstream to feed the urban sprawl that is Atlanta. The metropolis has become a beast with a bottomless appetite for water — and not just for drinking.

To some Georgians, there is Georgia and then there is Atlanta, which is almost a state unto its own, apart from the rest of the Peach State.

The agreement, giving more of Lanier’s water to Atlanta, would drastically diminish the water downstream for Alabama and Florida, which could have been devastating for the two states.

In February, however, the U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington, D.C., ruled the secret agreement was illegal according to federal law. That decision led to another round in the water war, when Georgia petitioned the Supreme Court, whose ruling Monday will not be the end of the fight.
